Sciatica
Overview
Pain travelling down the leg is commonly referred to as
sciatica. Osteopaths have great results in the treatment
of sciatic-like pain. Successful treatment is usually the
result of a detailed history and clinical examination to
determine its cause. Often sciatica will not get better
until its cause is identified and treatment is tailored.
Causes
Sciatic pain may be caused by any number of structures
originating in the low back, sacroiliac joints and hips.
These include degeneration, nerve and disc pathology,
muscle tightness and trigger points
Treatments
Treatment helps settle sciatic pain by targeting the primary cause rather than the symptoms. Specific techniques include soft tissue massage, gentle manipulation and stretching.
Follow up
Sciatic pain usually settles rapidly but it’s important that osteopathic management continues until the structure causing sciatica has healed.
